Frequently asked questions
Who prepares my return?
Your return is prepared personally by Dr. Jean-Philippe Montout, DBA, a PTIN-registered tax preparer and CPA Candidate with more than 30 years of experience across the financial, construction, nonprofit, and agricultural sectors. [If you complete the IRS Annual Filing Season Program, add: "Dr. Montout is also a participant in the IRS Annual Filing Season Program."]What documents will I need?
Most clients need photo ID, last year's tax return, W-2s, 1099s (interest, dividends, freelance or contract income), and records of deductions such as mortgage interest, property taxes, charitable gifts, and childcare costs. Business owners also need their year-end Profit and Loss statement and Balance Sheet. After your consultation, you'll receive a personalized checklist so nothing is missed.Do I need QuickBooks to work with you?
No. Individual clients only need an email address to use our secure document portal. Business clients can keep the bookkeeping software they already use and simply upload their year-end reports. If you'd like us to handle your bookkeeping year-round, we can set you up in QuickBooks Online as part of that service. How do I send my documents securely?
You'll receive a personal invitation to our secure client portal, powered by Intuit, where you can upload documents from your computer or take photos with your phone. Your information is protected with bank-level encryption. For your safety, please never send Social Security numbers or tax documents by regular email or text.Do you work with clients outside Elizabeth City?
[Yes. We serve clients in Elizabeth City and anywhere in [North Carolina / the United States]. Everything can be handled remotely through our secure portal, video calls, and electronic signatures, and in-person meetings are available by appointment.]How much does tax preparation cost?
[Fees depend on the complexity of your return. Individual returns start at $___, and business returns start at $___.] You'll receive a clear quote before any work begins, and your initial consultation is always free. When should I get started?
As early as possible. Booking your consultation before January gives us time to set up your portal and checklist, so your return can be prepared as soon as your documents arrive and well ahead of the April deadline. What if I receive a letter from the IRS?
Don't panic, and don't ignore it. Send us a copy through your secure portal and we'll help you understand what the notice means and what response is needed. For returns we prepared, we'll help you gather the documents and prepare your reply.Do you prepare prior-year or late returns?
[Yes. If you've missed a filing year, we can help you catch up and get current. Book a consultation and we'll review which years need attention.]Ready for a stress-free tax season?
